Power Rating

Storage or rapid electric water heaters typically have a rated input power starting at 3,000 watts. Instant electric water heaters, however, require about 7,000 watts or more. Before purchasing a water heater, check your building's electrical system to ensure it can handle the required power. For high-power appliances, you may need to apply for three-phase power supply from your electricity provider, which involves a more complicated process.

Energy Label

In December 2000, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) launched a voluntary Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme for storage electric water heaters. The scheme uses a graded energy label with five levels, with Grade 1 being the most energy-efficient. Pay attention to the energy efficiency label on the water heater to choose the most suitable one.

Water Pressure

All water heaters require an adequate water supply to function correctly. If the water volume is insufficient or the pressure is low, the heating element of the water heater may get damaged. While instant electric water heaters usually have a built-in water pressure control device, always check your building’s water pressure requirements before purchasing.

Capacity

Different water heaters have various capacities. Generally, a 15-liter water heater is suitable for a family of four. However, your specific needs may vary. Choose the appropriate capacity based on the number of family members and your water usage habits.

Water Temperature

Different brands of water heaters have varying preset water temperatures. When choosing a water heater, consider your personal preferences. For instance, if you prefer hotter showers, look for a water heater with higher temperature settings.

When considering the purchase of an electric water heater, besides the type and functionality, ensure your home meets the necessary conditions for installation and use. This can prevent potential issues post-purchase. Most water heater manufacturers or dealers hire licensed plumbers and experienced electricians for installation, so always check the installers' licenses before proceeding.
